Interview Preparation

Conducting an interview clearly takes a lot of preparation.  These tutorials were very helpful in that specific suggestions were provided.  The key takeaways are as follows: 

  • Do not ask questions that have only yes or no answers.  These questions lead to awkward situations with the person being interviewes. 
  • Learn from people who conduct great interviews.  Howard Stern is cited as an example because he asks blunt questions. 
  • Prepare for an interview by researching the interviewee.  Write an outline of questions based on the goals of the interview. 
  • Try not to worry about silences during an interview.  Its better to have a few seconds of silence than too much talking 
  • Journalists use open-ended questions because they are trying to get an authentic stories.  They want to write articles that people want to read.
